Knick-Knack Bric-a-Brac

As I await my second vaccine jab, I think of all that the pandemic has taken from us and brought to us. How it’s changed us….and then I start to twitch. Something has emerged from our lock down, something I never thought I would see in my lifetime, something that goes against all that I believe in and work towards, cluttercore.

GenZ, what are you thinking? Stacks of unread books, walls covered in disordered papers and a small botanical garden encompassing entire apartments? Closets full of hats? Maximalism gone wild! I get it…you find comfort in things…pandemic over shopping…surrounding yourselves with treasures in a purposeful mess. Is this cozy? Is this comfortable? Well knick-knack bric-a-brac!!!

I’m having flashbacks to my 12-year-old self. Dutifully dusting my mother’s endless “collections” of coziness. Walls and shelves covered in treasures spanning decades. Closets full of organized boxes of baubles and tchotchkes. Darling little remembrances on every tabletop all grouped together just waiting to be conversation starters. Dusting took days.

I get it…this last year was hard and we want to surround ourselves with all the things that mean something to us. As for me, I’ll wait to surround myself with all the people that mean the most to me and when I get my fill I’ll return to my uncluttered, organized house and worry about dusting another day.
